What is EBUS TBNA?
A minimally invasive bronchoscopic procedure combining ultrasound imaging and fine-needle aspiration through the airway wall to sample lymph nodes or masses adjacent to the airways.

Purpose / Indications

  • Staging of lung cancer by sampling mediastinal/hilar nodes
  • Diagnosis of mediastinal lymphadenopathy (sarcoidosis, lymphoma, TB)
  • Biopsy of peribronchial lesions

Procedure details

  • Performed under sedation/local anesthesia

  • Multiple passes from different angles for adequate sample

Preparation & recovery

  • Fasting for a number of hours prior to procedure
  • IV access, monitoring vitals
  • Mild sore throat, cough, minimal bleeding possible
  • Most patients discharged same day

Risks / complications

  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Rarely, pneumothorax (collapsed lung)
  • Transient hypoxia
